Neck and shoulder pain affects many adults in the UK. We spend long hours looking down, whether at our desks, on our computers, or using our phones. Over time, this can lead to a tight neck, stiff shoulders, headaches, and upper back pain.

At The Reinge Clinic, we help office workers reduce pain, improve posture, and restore mobility with personalised Physiotherapy / Sports Therapy and Biomechanical Assessments.

What Causes Neck and Shoulder pain?

Our head is the heaviest part of the body, supported by a network of muscles that keep it upright and allow smooth movement without damaging the spinal cord. These muscles connect from the base of the skull down into the shoulders, all working together to hold your head up and enable movement.

Deep within the neck are small stabiliser muscles that function correctly only when your head is in the right position. When your head moves forward, as it often does when we sit at a desk or look down at a phone, these muscles become overstretched and can no longer keep the vertebrae in their optimal alignment.

This forward position causes the vertebrae to sit closer together, reducing space within the neck and increasing susceptibility to disc, nerve, and bony issues such as osteoarthritis. Leading to both neck and shoulder pain.

Because the neck plays such a crucial role in protecting the spinal cord, the larger movement muscles step in to provide support. However, these muscles aren’t designed for stabilisation, so over time they become tired, stiff, and painful. As they attach down into the shoulders, this is why tension and tightness often develop across the tops of the shoulders and into the neck.

How to I get rid of my neck and shoulder pain?

To relieve neck and shoulder pain, we first need to realign the neck and then strengthen the shoulders.

We begin with neck retraction exercises to guide your neck back into a better postural position. At the same time, we use hands-on techniques to release tightness at the front of the neck. This helps those muscles to relax, allowing the muscles at the back of the neck to strengthen. Over a few weeks, this process starts to restore your neck’s natural alignment.

Once the neck sits in a better position, we move on to the shoulders. If your head has been held forward, your shoulders will almost certainly have rounded too. We begin this by again loosening the muscles at the front of the shoulders. Muscles such as the pecs and biceps pull the shoulders forward when they are overly tight. Then we strengthen the rhomboids, mid traps, and rotator cuff muscles in the upper back area to help your shoulders stay in their correct posture.

As your head and shoulders realign, the neck and shoulder pain stiffness will ease, and the pain levels will start to recede, leaving you to get through a day at the office pain free.

How can I stop my neck pain returning?

There are some great desk based solutions available these days to help prevent neck pain from returning. The first step is to look closely at your workstation. If you find yourself leaning forward while working, try to understand why. Is your desk too low or too high? Is your chair causing you to slump back as you sit?

Your chair is a good place to start, as most companies are happy to consider adjustments or replacements. Switching to a stool can encourage a more upright posture, or you could use an exercise ball if that’s practical. Stability cushions are another excellent option, they help you sit tall and avoid leaning forward, while also engaging and strengthening your spinal stabiliser muscles. They’re inexpensive and can be easily placed on your existing chair.

Another great option is a standing desk. This allows you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day, helping you maintain better posture and reduce fatigue. By adjusting your desk height, you can prevent slumping and keep your head and shoulders in a healthier alignment.

Absolutely! Although there is little that can be done about the medical element of a chronic disease, such as Spondylitis, Fibromyalgia, or Arachnoiditis, for example. There is a huge amount we can do to keep the neck and spine strong, aligned and less painful, allowing you to manage your condition in a much better way.

This is always a difficult question and it very much depends on the individual and how long the pain has been present for.

However, we would expect you to be feeling an improvement within 3 sessions and often clients symptoms are completely resolved within 6 sessions.

The exception to this is in the case of chronic conditions that have been going on a while, or for disease states, treatment  can be a prolonged. If we feel this is the case with you, we would discus the options and we often spread sessions out to make it financially practical to continue longer term treatment.

Absolutely, a lot of numbness that accompanies neck and shoulder pain is due to the nerves getting caught or irritated as they exit the neck. By restrengthening and aligning the neck and shoulders we often completely resolve the numbness symptoms.

Numbness can also be cause by problems such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and for more information on how we treat this, click here

Yes we can. We have several ways of referring you for imagery if we feel it is necessary.

We would start by writing a letter to your GP detailing the condition and why we feel a Scan or X-ray would be useful. Unlike many clinics, we don’t charge to write letters to GP’s.

If you would prefer to go private, we link in with Scan.com and several local private scanning companies. We can quickly and easily refer you directly for a Private MRI Scan, Ultrasound Scan or X-Ray should you need it without the need for GP involvement.

The results are then sent directly to us,  as well as to you, and we are then able to explain them to you and  to write to your GP for a consultant follow up should this be required.
